Chinese Bronze Collection Seminar

On November 20th, experts from academic institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Palace Museum, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Wuhan University convened at the Guardian Art Center to engage in scholarly discussions on the topic of Chinese Bronze Collecting Culture. This symposium, co-hosted by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Guardian Education Center, featured a dynamic exchange of perspectives, offering the audience a premier academic feast. At the beginning of the forum, Mr. Kou Qin, President and CEO of Guardian Investment Holdings Co., Limited., together with Professor James Rondeau, the Director and President of the Art Institute of Chicago, delivered welcome speeches. With top experts gathered, the event provided various angles on the exploration of Chinese bronzes through lively discussions.


Guest Introduction

 

汪涛 Wang Tao

Executive director of initiatives in Asia and the Head of the Asian Department at the Art Institute of Chicago, Mr. Wang Tao previously served as head of Chinese works of art at Sotheby’s New York. He has also lectured at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.


丁孟 Ding Meng

Ding Meng serves as the Deputy Director and Research Fellow of the Antiquities Department at the Palace Museum. He is a graduate supervisor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Chinese National Academy of Arts. He is also the Vice President of the Bronze Committee of the China Cultural Relics Academy and a standing board member of the China Numismatic Society. His published works include “Ceremonies in the East,” “Identification of Bronze Mirrors,” “Bronzes of the Forbidden City,” “Ding Meng on Bronzeware,” “Stone Drum Gallery of the Forbidden City,” and so on.


苏荣誉 Su Rongyu

Native to Shaanxi province, after graduating with a degree in Casting Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1983, Mr. Su Rongyu pursued graduate studies in the History of Science and Technology at the University of Science and Technology of China, focusing on ancient bronze technology. After graduation, he joined the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHNS). Dedicated to researching ancient metals, he has visited over a hundred museums, including many prestigious international museums and academic institutions, and has published dozens of papers. He currently serves as a Research Fellow at the IHNS and holds professorial positions at the Nanjing University of the Arts and as a visiting professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts.


张昌平 Zhang Changping

Zhang Changping, professor of Archaeology at the School of History of Wuhan University, formerly worked as a visiting researcher at the National Gallery of Art’s Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts in the United States, a visiting researcher at the Research Center for Traditional Techniques and Conservation Science under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a visiting professor at the Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University. His principal works include “Study of Bronze Artifacts of the Zeng State,” “Bronze and Culture of the Fang States,” and “Study of Southern Bronzes during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties.”


泰祥洲 Tai Xiangzhou

Tai Xiangzhou is an artist and Doctor of Fine Arts from the Painting Department at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. His works are currently collected by several prestigious institutions, including the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Harvard University, the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Peking University, the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Princeton University Art Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
