Guardian Chronicles: The Untold Stories of Antiquarian Auctions” – New Book Signing and Dialogue Event

On March 17, 2018, the Guardian Press and Shanghai Fine Arts Publishing House co-hosted the book signing and dialogue event for the legendary collection “Guardian Chronicles: The Untold Stories of Antiquarian Auctions” at the Guardian Art Center. Mr. Tian Songqing, Deputy Chief Editor of Shanghai Fine Arts Publishing House, and Mr. Kou Qin, Chairman and President of Guardian Investment Holdings Co., Limited. and General Manager of Guardian Art Center, representing the organizers, shared the origins of the book “Guardian Chronicles: The Untold Stories of Antiquarian Auctions”. The dialogue featuring Mr. Tuo Xiaotang and Ms. Chen Hongyan, Director of the Ancient Book Department at the National Library of China, was enlightening and engaging. They recounted the behind-the-scenes legends of the ancient book-collecting world, unraveled the wit and strategies of eminent book collectors with humorous anecdotes, and conveyed deep insights into the art of book collecting and possession.

 

Guest Introduction

 

Tuo Xiaotang graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor’s degree in History from the Department of History of Northwest University. From 1982 to 1984, he served as a research intern at the Historical Research Institute of the Shaanxi Academy of Social Sciences. He completed his Master’s degree in Modern Chinese History at Northwest University in 1987. Between 1987 and 1993, he worked at the National Library of China, where he was the leader of the Rare Books Section and Map & Atlas Section. In 1993, he became the Deputy Research Fellow for Rare Book Acquisition and Editing at the National Library. That same year, he joined China Guardian Auctions Co., Ltd., overseeing ancient and rare book auctions for more than two decades, and served as the General Manager of the Rare Books Department at China Guardian. He has been responsible for the collections and transfers of “Weng Family Collection of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting” (Shanghai Library), “Chen Chengzhong’s Collection of Qiyang” (National Library of China), and the “Sui Ren Essays (Ode to the Expedition)” (The Palace Museum). He holds various positions including committee member of the “Chinese Precious Books History Series” editorial board at the National Library of China and standing director of the Sun Yat-sen Cultural Exchange Association of China. His publications include “Inside Stories of Modern Chinese Diplomacy,” “Resistance War in North China” (chief editor), “Customs of Old China” (chief editor), “Glimpses of Old China” (executive chief editor), “Catalogue of Weng Family Collection of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting,” “Illustrated Catalogue of Chen Chengzhong’s Collection of Qiyang,” “Mediators of Ancient Books” (co-authored with Mr. Wei Li), and “Huai Shi Book Talks” (author).

 

Chen Hongyan graduated from Peking University, majoring in Classical Literature. She began her career in the same year at the National Library of China (formerly Beijing Library) after graduation, working in the Rare Books Special Collections Department of the Rare Books Section, focusing on ancient texts cataloging and organization. Now she serves as the research fellow and Director of the Ancient Book Department at the National Library of China. Her personal scholarly contributions include critical editions of “Hua Jian Ji” and “Liu Kezhuang’s Poetry Collection.” Her major research accomplishments include writing “Chinese Edition Culture Series – Yuan Editions,” editing and publishing “Yun Xiang Ge Cong Shu – Ji Shuying’s Literary Collection,” and authoring scholarly works such as “A Compilation of Modern and Contemporary Seals Found in Dunhuang Manuscripts” and “Ji Shuying and Bibliography.” Chen has organized and participated in multiple international seminars on ancient manuscript research and preservation. Additionally, she undertakes the task of managing the research and cultural promotion activities of the Rare Books Section.
