Landmark: Mapping Chinese Contemporary Art

Exhibition Time: December 16, 2017 - January 31, 2018

The Guardian Art Center, in conjunction with internationally esteemed curators Zheng Shengtian and Diana Freundl, launches the opening of its first significant contemporary art exhibition titled “Landmarks: Mapping Chinese Contemporary Art”. This exhibit debuts on December 16th, 2017, within the newly completed edifice of the Guardian Art Center. It encompasses an assemblage of monumental installations, visual media, and paintings crafted by 15 contemporary artists. These works function as landmarks in either a literal or symbolic sense or in their societal impact, assisting visitors in recognizing history and confronting reality.

A landmark often refers to a location within a landscape that is conspicuously notable: a mount, a lake, a temple, or a skyscraper. Landmarks of the past or present serve as gathering places and thus forge collective memories. This exhibition features 15 iconic pieces that are seminal in the evolution of contemporary Chinese art since 1985. Furthermore, the majority of these pieces possess thematic connections to geographical locales. Whether focusing on specific sites across China’s vast expanse, from the Great Wall to the Pearl River Delta, or selecting spaces that traverse history and geography, both real and fictitious, these works directly or indirectly, for metaphorical purposes, the artists’ observation and understanding of social and natural changes in China and even on a global scale.
